Can An Unhealthy Spine Affect Your Internal Organs

This is a great question. We have many patients coming into our office with back pain, neck pain, and headaches. But they often present with other conditions that are not “typical” chiropractic conditions. Although we can not say that we can cure disease or treat these conditions, we still pay attention to the nerves and the spinal level that may relate to that condition. To help you understand the relationship of the spine to the internal organs it would be helpful for you to look at an “Autonomic Nervous System Chart” or you can go to our web site and see a Merck Chart that shows the relationship of the spine, the nerve system and the organs. Many of our patients who have these “non-typical” conditions do see their conditions improve or clear up while under care for more typical pain issues. Look at what David Fenton, M.D., PhD. of University of Rochester School of Medicine had to say about the nervous system and the immune system. “Nerve fibers go into virtually every organ of the immune system. We found that if you took the nerves away from the spleen or lymph nodes, you virtually stopped immune responses in their tracks.”
Henry Windsor, M.D. questioned chiropractic. “Chiropractors claim that by ‘adjusting’ vertebrae they can relieve stomach troubles, ulcers, menstrual cramps, thyroid conditions, kidney disease, constipation, heart disease, lung and other diseases-but how?” He performed an experiment: he dissected human and animal cadavers to see if there was a relationship between any diseased internal organs discovered on autopsy and the vertebrae and nerves that went to the organs.
In a series of three studies through the University of Pennsylvania, he dissected a total of 75 human and 72 cat cadavers and found 221 structures other than the spine were diseased. He found a nearly 100% correlation between “minor curvatures” of the vertebrae and disease of the internal organs. Some of the disease categories were:
HEART DISEASE- All 20 cases with heart and pericardium conditions had the upper five thoracic vertebrae misaligned(T1-T5).
LUNG DISEASE- All 26 cases of lung disease had spinal misalignments in the upper thoracic area(Upper Back).
STOMACH DISEASE- All 9 cases of stomach conditions had spinal misalignments in the mid-thoracic area (T5-T9).
LIVER DISEASE- All 13 cases of liver disease had misalignments in the mid-thoracic area (T5-T9).
GALL BLADDER – All 5 cases with gallstone disease had spinal misalignments in the mid thoracic area (T5-T9).
PANCREAS- All 3 cases with pancreatic disease had spinal misalignments in the mid thoracic area (T5-T9).
SPLEEN- All 11 cases with spleen disease had spinal misalignments in the mid thoracic area (T5-T9).
KIDNEY- All 17 cases with kidney disease had misalignments in the lower thoracic area (T10-T12)
PROSTATE AND BLADDER DISEASE- All 8 cases with prostate and bladder disease had lumbar vertebrae misaligned(L1-L3).
UTERUS- the 2 cases with uterine conditions had the second lumbar misaligned.

Dr. Windsor’s results were published in “The Medical Times” (1921, 49 pp267-271). Other researchers have confirmed his discovery. Today medical literature contains many experiments proving chiropractic’s theory and effectiveness and the relationship between the spine, the nerves and overall health. Although it’s great to see someone’s back pain clear up, it’s even better when in some cases, we can see other conditions like asthma, heartburn, bedwetting, ear infections clear up as well.
